Who? Ken and Judith Finch are CMS Ireland Mission Partners, working in partnership with the Church in Luweero Diocese, Uganda. They have both had a long standing commitment to mission and a particular interest in Kiwoko Hospital. Ken’s job, as Programme’s Manager involves financial oversight of the hospital’s activities; liaison with donors and government and management of the hospital farm. Judith works primarily as an Occupational Therapist but also manages the guesthouse-looking after medical students undertaking electives at the hospital and managing the resource centre. Kiwoko Hospital Kiwoko Hospital was established in the late 1980s by Dr Ian Clarke from Bangor. As the Church in Luweero sought to respond to the needs it faced, it soon became apparent that more extensive facilities would be needed. Using church land, and with the support of churches in Ireland and CMS Ireland, the initial clinic was built. Maternity, children's and TB wards were soon added, and in 1991, the hospital was officially opened by the vice-president. A growing concern, since then, the hospital has continued to expand. There are now separate wards for male and female patients. This also includes a section for malnourished children and a special baby care unit. The laboratory is one of the best equipped outside Kampala, and performs over 4000 tests every month. There are two theatres, which can handle most emergencies. The hospital is also involved in training, for both laboratory assistants and also for enrolled nurses. On top of this it also co-ordinates an active Community Based Health Care programme – specifically targeting HIV/AIDS and STIs and working in health education amongst young people. The hospital represents a vital thread in the ministry of the diocese and the ministry offered extends to evangelism and outreach – with recent years seeing the planting and nurturing of several new churches in the district. Kiwoko Hospital’s motto is:
